Graphic Design Prices & Rates Guide - Sydney |
|
The hardest part of a job is always giving the client an estimate up
front. I've tried to compare some prices I found online, but they
seem to be all over the map. Plus, every job is so different and
it's hard to predict how many revisions a piece will need. So to those of you that have made art into your business or are purchasing it, how do you come up with and know what the right prices are? How much you charge can vary greatly depending on what the graphic design will be used for, how quickly a client wants it, and how much skill/experience a graphic designer brings to the table. Opinion 1 - Standard RatesGraphic Designing is a profession where the raw material is creativity and the output is art. Calculating the work done in terms of money most of the time becomes an arguable issue. The fiscal calculations of a project depend on many aspects, though rough but different standards are established for various types of graphic designing. |
||
| The services of most
graphic designers can also be calculated in hours. For instance, the
standard rates for basic graphic design are approximately $80 per
hour, for custom graphic design $160 per hour, for 3-D graphic
design $250 per hour, and for prepress correction and graphic
adjustments $80 per hour. Such types of calculations have greatly
simplified the rate and cost problems of designing projects, as the
designer is getting paid rationally if a certain project requires
more time. Similarly a client can give work in contracts that are
based on hours. Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com?expert=Marcus_Peterson |

Opinion 2 - Typical Design CostsA Graphic Designer is a commercial artist who combines elements such as typography, illustration, photographs and color to convey a specific image, feeling or message in support of a product, company or organization. Graphic Designers create many of the items you see everyday Logos, Ads, brochures, posters, book covers, and more. |
||
Typical Graphic Design CostsThe hourly rate charged by graphic designers ranges from $20 - $350, but averages $65 - $75 an hour nationwide, according to a survey by HOW Magazine. The hourly rate is generally based on prevailing local costs as well as the designer's training, experience and reputation. Standard or simple projects might be billed at a flat rate, but most quotes are based on an estimate of time involved multiplied by the designer's hourly rate. Designing a logo to symbolically represent your company starts around $150 - $450 for an online graphic design service using standardized templates. This sort of design is customized only in the sense that a pre-existing format is adapted for your specific business, but it is a good deal cheaper than a design concept created from scratch for your company. Hiring a professional graphic designer or firm to create a company logo runs anywhere from $500 - $2000 or more, depending on the number of initial concepts presented for review, the number of revisions and the experience and reputation of the designer or firm. Some high end design firms will charge $2000 - $5000 or more to design a logo.Designing business stationery from templates runs about $150 - $250 and may be included in the higher priced logo design fees. Designing an 8 1/2 x 11 inch folding brochure is $30 - $450 for customizing a standard template: hiring a graphic designer or a firm to create a similar brochure can run from $300 - $600 or more depending on the complexity of the project, the number of colors and revisions, local rates and the designer or firms experience and reputation. What should be includedThe graphic designer will need a clear project description (such as a logo, website or three fold brochure), the target audience, a tentative budget and a rough timeline. In turn the designer should give you a written proposal outlining what is included (a certain amount of initial design ideas, a specific number of revisions, final product, etc)and who does what in terms of writing text, supplying photographs, proofreading or other related tasks.When the proposal is accepted, typically you'll meet with the designer several times to talk about concept, layouts and schedules, before being presented with a mock-up of a potential design (or designs). Typically, but not always, a designer will oversee the project through the printing process, be clear whether this is included in the cost estimate. Additional CostsExtensive revisions after the initial concept is approved are considered "author's alterations" and are usually an extra charge. The cost will depend entirely on the designer's standard hourly rate and the type and scope of the revision. Extremely extensive revisions that change the nature of the project may require a new contract.Printing costs are typically not included in graphic design fees, and will vary depending on the type of project, the number of colours used and the total number of printed pieces. Opinion 3 - Price CalculationsGraphic Designers usually either work for a studio or firm or operate independently from their home or office. In a studio, an entry level designer can expect to be paid $15 - $18/hr, however a graduate with competence and a worthy portfolio can expect to start off with a salary of $45k - $65k per year, which would seem like $25 - $36/hr. In reality, |
||
| designers who are
making decent money usually work more than 40 hours a week. Working independently is a totally different story. Freelance or registered business owning designers need to charge more because they need to pay income taxes on that income. They also need to cover business costs like electricity, equipment, paper, ink, insurance, etc. Freelance designers usually charge between $40 and $140 per hour, depending on experience and quality of work. It also depends on location, type of work, client and convenience of the project. A typical calculation for a freelancer with 3-4 years experience working from home: $50,000 expected annual design salary - single employee +$40,000 annual operating costs (rent, equipment, utilities, travel, insurance) =$90,000 business costs /1,750 (Billable annual hours - 36 hrs a week x 49 weeks per year) = $51.43 per hour (break even rate) +30% taxes = $66.86 per hour +50% profit for growth = $92.57 per hour Totals $92.57 per hour charge for clients $25.51 per hour goes to the designers pocket Article source: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_much_are_Graphic_designers_paid_per_hour |
